AI-found PHP flaw puts deployment coverage in focus

Illustration, not documentary evidence of the event.
OpenAI’s GPT-5.6 Sol and Google’s Gemini 4 Argon helped uncover a critical PHP vulnerability that could affect millions of websites, according to the-decoder.com, citing OpenAI and security firm Wiz. OpenAI found the flaw through its Patch-the-Planet initiative. Wiz independently identified the same vulnerabilities using its Atlas platform alongside both models.
The response involved PHP developers, Wiz, Cloudflare and US agencies, including CISA and the White House. Coordination took two months across five phases. The report also describes a GitHub tool for checking whether a server’s PHP version is affected, but does not provide affected version numbers or the tool’s address.
For operators, the consequential claim concerns deployment differences. Wiz says language models can adapt exploits across PHP versions, configurations and memory layouts, reducing the effort required to attack different installations. That is Wiz’s assessment, not an independently established performance result in the supplied reporting. It nevertheless gives operators a concrete decision criterion: a check on one installation should not stand in for checks across materially different deployments.
A hypothetical planning calculation: an organization running two PHP versions across three configurations would have 2 × 3 = 6 version-and-configuration groups, assuming every combination exists. An operator could inventory those groups, establish affected status against the applicable PHP advisory, and track remediation separately for each. Six is a calculated planning count, not a vulnerability count or proof of complete coverage. Memory-layout differences, which Wiz also identifies, could require further distinctions.
The combined lesson is that discovery capability and response coverage are separate operational problems. Multiple AI-assisted efforts found the flaw, while the coordinated response still required two months and several organizations. For a team deciding where to invest effort, this suggests pairing AI-assisted discovery with a deployment inventory and a clear route from findings to remediation. The report offers no comparative detection rates that would justify choosing one named model over the other.
