Athenahealth has launched AthenaPatient MCP, a Model Context Protocol server that lets patients connect their health records to Anthropic’s Claude and ask questions about them, according to zdnet.com. The connection is available to Claude Pro and Max subscribers, with reported monthly prices of $20 and $100, respectively.

Participation is optional. Athenahealth says patients authenticate their accounts, choose which health information Claude can access and can revoke that access. Available information includes lab results, medications, allergies, visit history and care plans. The company also says its agreement prohibits Anthropic from using data accessed through this connection to train models or improve its products. These are Athenahealth’s assurances, rather than independently verified findings.

For a patient considering a subscription specifically for this connection, the useful comparison is access at each price. Both reported plans include eligibility for AthenaPatient MCP. Calculated from the reported prices, Max costs $80 more per month: $100 minus $20. The report establishes no additional AthenaPatient capability attached to that difference. On the supplied evidence, Pro is therefore the lower-cost entry point for this particular task. That comparison does not assess other differences between the subscriptions.

The more consequential distinction is between finding information and deciding what to do about it. Athenahealth says the connection does not provide medical advice or replace a clinician’s judgment. A concrete use is asking for the most recent recorded red blood cell count. Questions about diagnosis, treatment or changes to care belong with a qualified healthcare professional, according to the company’s product executive.

Together, those boundaries suggest a focused workflow: choose a specific record-retrieval question, authorize the relevant information, then ask Claude to identify the recorded value and its date. Compare the answer with the underlying record before using it to prepare questions for a clinician. The decision to connect should turn on whether that retrieval convenience is worth the subscription and the access granted. A restriction on model training answers one data-use question; patients can separately check retention and deletion terms before authorizing access.
